Children who are read to are more likely to become good readers. And children who read at grade level by the fourth grade are four times more likely to graduate from high school.
Become a ReadingPal. ReadingPals is a program where volunteers provide positive reinforcement to a child while enhancing their literacy skills. Not only do ReadingPals help improve reading support, but they also help kids to develop a love of reading.
A three-hour training will be provided to all new ReadingPals, and several trainings are already scheduled for July and August in preparation for the school year. After completing the training session, volunteers will be matched with a pair of kindergarten or first grade students. Volunteers commit to meet with their ReadingPals afterschool once a week (or every other week with a partner) throughout the entire school year.
There are twenty-five afterschool sites to choose from across Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties. Background checks will be performed on all volunteers. ReadingPals will read with students as well as engage them in learning activities and games. United Way Suncoast is planning to recruit at least 200 volunteers for the 2013-14 school year!
ReadingPals has been generously funded by Carol and Barney Barnett and is a collaboration between the United Way, Women Leadership Initiative, The Children’s Movement and local partner agencies.
Thank you for your interest in becoming a ReadingPal. Please fill out the information below and someone will contact you shortly.
